For a lot of couples, the wedding cake is an integral part of their special day and I pride myself on designing wedding cakes that really stand out from the 'off-the-shelf' crowd and make the wedding day even more memorable. Of course, if you're not fussed about having a bespoke cake made just for you, you can always buy a mass produced wedding cake M&S style, with a multitude of additives, but surely for your once-in-a-lifetime day, you want something bespoke and memorable?
Modern Wedding Cake Design Process - Initial Contact
Ideally a couple's initial contact with me will be a number of months before the date of the wedding, so that we have a suitable amount of time to arrange tasting cakes to be made and the back and forth of the wedding cake design process.
Most of the wedding cakes I design are for weddings in London, and can normally travel 2-3 hours from where I am based in Tooting, so I can deliver cakes to Kent, Surrey, Sussex and the other home counties. The further and longer the journey, the higher the delivery cost. Please bear this in mind when contacting me.
During the initial contact of the modern wedding cake design process I will give you an idea of the starting costs for your wedding cake based on the number of tiers and portions and delivery and setup costs.
Please consider the style of cakes that I design when contacting. I work with Swiss meringue buttercream and ganache and design more modern bespoke wedding cakes and like to use bold colouring, so you're looking for a fondant covered cake with sugar flowers, I'm not the wedding cake designer for you.
Cake Sampling
The fun bit! All of the flavours that I make are delicious, even if I say so myself but of course everybody has their favourites. The sample cakes I make are 4" in diameter so there's plenty to go around if you want to share with a few friends. The standard box of wedding cake tasters consists of 3 cakes but of course you can have more.
I also like to deliver these myself so I get to meet you and say hi.
Securing The Booking & Finalising The Wedding Cake Design
If you've enjoyed the cakes and want to book me in I require a £150 non-refundable deposit to secure the date.
We can then work in finalising the design of the wedding cake. Some couples will have put a lot of thought in to the wedding cake they would like, while others will give me a more loose theme for the day that they'd like to incorporate into the design of the wedding cake.
It also helpful if you have a mood board you're working with and/or have been thinking about the look of the wedding cake based around the theme of the day/venue. Of course, you can also send me images of previous wedding cakes that I have designed for inspiration.
I won't copy other designers wedding cakes, but if you have seen other wedding cakes that you, I can work with you to tease out which design elements or mood of the cake you like and incorporate this into your own wedding cake.
Based on our discussions I will create a number of sketches for you to get feedback and we will hopefully settle on a final wedding cake design (and price) at least 6 weeks before the big day.
I will send you an invoice confirming all of the details (size, flavours, design) and then full payment required 6 weeks before the wedding day.
If you do want to make any changes to the flavours and/or design of the cake after this point I always try and be flexible, but this may incur extra costs.
If we're using flowers on the cake and you're using a particular wedding florist, I will liaise with them to ensure that there is consistency in the flowers used (there may have to be some adaptation if the flowers varieties aren't food-safe).
I will also be in contact with the wedding venue to get an idea of timings on the day and workout the best time to deliver the cake, as well as checking about cake stands and positioning of the wedding cake.
