Jonathan and Birgir came to me looking for a concrete buttercream two tier wedding cake that incorporated their love of modern brutalist architecture, colour and abstract art.
Having looked at lots of other designers they chose ones who made wedding cakes with buttercream rather than fondant, and especially Swiss meringue buttercream, which is smoother, creamier and less sweet than American buttercream, something that other wedding cake designers work with.
It's always a helpful bonus when couples can send me a mood board for the look of the cake that they want.
I always love making concrete-effect buttercream cakes, so it was great to see that this was the look of the wedding cake that they were going for. They grey of the cake always provides a gorgeous contrasting background to brighter colours.
The colour palette was bright and colourful (just what I like) combined with an abstract, free-flowing style of art.
I applied the colouring to the concrete base using a palette knife to create a more textured buttercream effect on the cake.
The topper is made with coloured moulded chocolate which I created by shaping over cut polystyrene moulds.
The overall look of the wedding cake provides lots of contrast in shapes, with the clean and sharp edges, the textured look of the buttercream and the chocolate topper.
